I think that soft lighting can make even the ugliest of situations look a little better (i.e. being debiliattingly drunk and puking on your friends building.)
So, I guess at this point in time the only thing serving as inspiration is nostalgia. Also, the idea of Sid Vicious themed sex clubs where you wear a lock with a chain around your neck and whoever gets your key gets to fuck you. I guess that would make life a lot more interesting.
In addition I read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" after promising myself in eighth grade I would never read it since everyone liked it so much - and it hurts me to admit that I found it pretty endearing. It mainly made me think that I'm interested in finding some people who want to trade real mix tapes with me.
